In recent years, one of the widely used techniques to improve the appearance of garments is screen (garment) printing. Depending on the printing type and the workload of companies, curing of printed fabrics is achieved at high temperatures (130-200°C) in this process. At these conditions, an important colour difference may occur between fabrics which are printed and not printed.
In this study, the relationship between the colour difference which occurs during the curing of reactive dyed cotton fabric and reactive dyes were investigated in screen printing conditions. For this, firstly, the relationship between the colour change and the type of the chromophore groups of reactive dyes were investigated. Secondly, colour change tendency of reactive dyes was investigated particularly. Lastly, the effects of the dyeing depth on the colour change which occurs during curing of the fabrics were determined. The colour change of the cured samples were evaluated using CIE L* a* b* coordinates.
According to the results, it can be said that, thermal sensitivity of the reactive dyes can’t be generalized considering the type of the chromophore group of the dye molecules. Each dye has a particular thermal sensitivity according to its own molecular structure. One of the reasons of the colour change which occurs in the pale shade dyed fabrics is the yellowing of the cotton fibres after curing.
